Take the Edge Off Your Nerves

If you have mild to moderate dental anxiety, you can opt for nitrous oxide. Commonly known as laughing gas, this is a simple and effective way to stay relaxed. You will:

  • Inhale through a small and comfortable nose mask
  • Induce a calm, floaty, anxiety-free feeling within minutes
  • Stay fully awake and aware, but feel relaxed and at ease

We can adjust the level throughout your procedure for maximum comfort. The effects wear off quickly after treatment. You can typically drive yourself home.

It's ideal for shorter appointments or if you want to feel calm without any lingering impact.

Relax During Lengthy Procedures

If you have more moderate to severe anxiety or you're undergoing longer procedures, you'll appreciate oral sedation. It provides a deeper level of relaxation. You will:

  • Take a prescription pill before your appointment begins
  • Feel a calm, drowsy state with reduced anxiety and minimal awareness
  • Remain conscious and responsive to communication from our team
  • Remember little to nothing about the procedure afterward

You will want to bring a trusted companion to drive you home. The oral sedation can linger after your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sedation Options

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes, sedation dentistry is very safe when administered by trained professionals. At Agave Dental Care, we carefully review your medical history and any current medications before recommending sedation. Both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation are widely used, well-researched, and approved for routine dental care. We closely monitor you throughout your visit to ensure your comfort.

What type of sedation is right for me?

The best sedation option depends on your level of anxiety, the type of procedure you're having, and your overall health. Nitrous oxide is a great choice for mild to moderate anxiety. You will feel calm but remain alert. You can return to normal activities right away. Oral sedation is better for severe anxiety, a sensitive gag reflex, or longer treatment needs. We'll discuss both options with you during your consultation.

Can I drive myself home after sedation?

If you receive nitrous oxide (laughing gas), you can usually drive yourself home shortly after your appointment. The effects wear off within minutes. However, if you take oral conscious sedation, you will need a trusted adult to drive you to and from the office. You'll also need to rest at home for the remainder of the day. This allows the medication to fully wear off.
